GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team outscored Barton College 34-11 over the final 15 minutes of the first half and cruised to an 87-61 non-conference victory Tuesday afternoon at Horne Arena.
The Bearcats improved to 4-2 while Barton is also 4-2.
It was Lander's final home game until Jan. 8, 2020, when the Bearcats face Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta. Lander has four road games in December.
Barton, like Lander, was an NCAA Tournament team last year.
"We've always been known as a team with a bunch of small guards that plays insanely hard and applies pressure defense," said head coach Kevin Pederson, "and we haven't been that team for several games so far this season. I was glad to see that team show up tonight."
Amiaya Melvins posted a double-double as she led five Lander double-figure scorers with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Cierra Revelle scored 15 points in her first career start for the Bearcats, making five 3-pointers while also blocking a pair of shots. Zamiya Passmore also scored 15 points while pacing Lander with seven assists.
Akira Wiggins, Summer Baer and Jami Tham-Morrobel paced Barton with 12 points apiece. Barton's 6-foot-1 post player Shanika Peterkin added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while blocking six shots.
Lander had a 35-34 edge on the boards despite Barton's size advantage.
The Bearcats trailed 10-5 before closing the first quarter on a 14-2 run. Melvins made a pair of layups, Passmore hit a jumper, and Revelle knocked down a 3-pointer which gave Lander the lead for good at 14-12 with 2:43 left in the opening period.
The run continued as Recarte nailed a trey and Harris made a pair of free throws to give the Bearcats a 19-12 advantage going into the second quarter.
Tabitha Dailey's three-point play sparked a 9-0 run late in the second period that extended Lander's lead to 20 points at 39-19.
The Bearcats led 39-21 at halftime.
Barton pulled within 43-28 with 6:46 left in the third quarter on Michelle Gainey's basket. Lander responded with nine unanswered points to build its advantage back to 52-28. Passmore scored five of the nine points, including a three-point play that started the run.
The Bearcat lead grew to 30 in the final minute of the third quarter on a Dailey layup off a Passmore steal, making it 61-31. The lead was 61-34 going into the final period.
Lander again led by 30 on Makaila Cange's free throw that made it 87-57 with 44 seconds left in the game.
