Bearcats win game two to split with rival Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lander softball team used a pair of home runs from Haven Pesce and Chandler Carey to win game two of its rivalry doubleheader at Erskine on Tuesday afternoon, splitting with the Flying Fleet and winning its first game in the series since 2013. The Bearcats dropped game one, 3-0, before taking game two, 7-2.

Lander (17-15) used a pair of Erskine (18-7) errors in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead in the second game of the day. The Flying Fleet struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 2-2.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Pesce broke the deadlock with her first career home run, a solo shot to left field. In need of insurance runs, Lander loaded the bases with two outs for Chandler Carey, who emptied the bags with a grand slam to put the game out of reach.

Abby Killian (10-5) went the distance for Lander, allowing two runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Hannah Houge (8-4) surrendered seven runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts for the Flying Fleet.

In game one, Erskine three runs in the third inning and rode the arm of Morgan Hendrix (9-3) to a 3-0 win. Hendrix allowed just three hits and struck out seven. Ashley Vinson (6-8) took the loss for Lander, despite allowing just two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and a walk.

Lander travels to No. 1-ranked North Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
